County Donates To GOP

As I read the Nov. 29 headline, "Cheney visit not reimbursed," coffee wasn't the only thing steaming in my kitchen. Not invited to the vice president's party, I marched with Democrats in the dark and snow campaigning for Larry Grant, while Air Force Two landed at a hangar more than a mile away. Now I learn my taxes were paying for the two sheriff patrols that watched us and kept us in our place.

Cheney's visit was for the sole purpose of rallying the party faithful as polls revealed the closeness of some of the races that threatened the GOP stronghold on this state. It worked. Republican candidates won, even Sali who will represent Idaho as a misfit within a minority.

Our city and county governments have made a contribution to the Republican Party and that should be illegal. For Rocky Watson to compare the need for law enforcement at the Aryan Nations' parade to law enforcement at Cheney's visit is a stretch of rationalization. One was to protect the community, the other to protect Republicans. But then again, both events brought national attention to Coeur d'Alene. Perhaps the city and county will donate $3,500 to the Democrats before 2008.
