Democrats
Letters To The Editor
Published in Spokesman Review As a participant at the Kootenai County Democratic caucus,
I was thrilled with the numbers and enthusiasm of the attendees. Young and old,
party regulars and newcomers, all participating in a very democratic process. As
a volunteer at our local office, several days ago, I answered a telephone call
from a 94-year-old woman who wanted the mailing address of the Clinton campaign. I laughed when that noted Republican intellect, Bob Nonini,
claimed we will be "crying in our beers" on Election Day. Throughout
our country voters are realizing that unless one is very rich, voting for the
likes of Larry Craig and George Bush is not in their best interest. Recently I read that Rick Warren, a mega-church evangelical
leader and author, had an epiphany that caused him to realize Christians should
steer away from divisive politics and, instead, focus on helping the needy and
the sick and restore civility in American culture. Hmmm, isn't that what
Democrats have always been about? The Iraq war is costing our country $338 million in
borrowed money every day. And McCain, with his neo-con advisers, advocates 100
more years. While Bush continues to peddle fear, our Democratic front-runners
offer change and hope. Janet G. Callen
